Abstract

This chapter traces the roots of conversation analysis (CA) back to American pragmatism and sketches the intellectual environment at the Californian universities in which CA emerged. The chapter then describes the early papers by Sacks, Schegloff, and Jefferson that established the research interest and method of CA. The chapter finishes by paying special tribute to the role of Gail Jefferson in creating the field and educating European scholars.
