Abstract

This article examines mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) programmes for displaced people in the light of the notion of interactional competence. It is based on fieldwork and data collected in a Lebanese non-gouvernemental organisation that provides assistance to displaced and precarious women in Beirut. The article focuses on the parts of MHPSS programmes that are dedicated to communicative activities, with the objective of improving the beneficiaries’ ability to interact, manage stress and foster social relationships. After presenting the concepts of communication that underlie these activities, the article examines two types of sequences. The ‘energisers’, which are designed to get the women moving, and the word search sequences, which occur more spontaneously on a recurrent basis in the sessions. The article shows that activities as simple as a collective word search can be effective in promoting both individual well-being and collective engagement in a shared interactional activity. It is suggested that such activities could be fruitfully used in a more formalised manner.
