Abstract
Highlights • Re-examining Barnett’s ethics of hospitality, which draws on Derrida and Levinas. • Data is video-recordings of cafe staff customer interaction, analysed using ethnomethodology and conversation analysis. • How staff and customers move from welcoming one another as anyone to recognising one another as someone. • The uses of routine phrases and categorising practices in hospitality. • How staff and customers offer invitations to hospitality, and pursue or avoid revealing more about one another.
