Abstract
This paper explores written repair in handwritten undergraduate essays from an ethnomethodological perspective. Rather than treating corrections as surface imperfections or indicators of deficient competence, this paper approaches strikethroughs, overwriting, insertions, arrows, and marginal additions as members’ methods for maintaining intelligibility in the course of text production. The data consist primarily of handwritten, in-class essays produced under timed, device-free conditions. The analysis shows that repair in handwriting is not external to writing but constitutive of it. Because inscription on paper is irreversible, revision cannot be fully erased. Instead, it remains publicly available as a record of practical reasoning. Rejected formulations, retrofitted additions, and re-routed reading paths display how writers monitor emerging trouble and locally recalibrate wording, relevance, and textual fit. In this sense, handwritten essays preserve a visible history of their own production. The paper contributes to ethnomethodological studies of written discourse by showing that repair is a documentable textual accomplishment through which academic writing is reflexively made accountable.
