Abstract
This chapter explores how simulated patients (SPs) enact “affordances” and employ “showing practices” to enhance medical students’ “sensory awareness” during video consultations. To this end, a multimodal analysis of video recordings of simulated video consultations was conducted to understand the communicative practices deployed by SPs to guide students in conducting remote consultations and physical examinations. Our analysis revealed that SPs create “visual affordances”—through camera framing, body movements, and gestures—to draw students’ attention to key sensory cues. These practices demonstrate the active role SPs play in developing students’ “sensory awareness”. The chapter concludes by proposing avenues for SPs training and simulation scenario design that support sensory awareness development in students and by enhancing the role of SPs in this training process.
