Abstract: This talk reports on the outcomes of a four-year project looking at how decision-making is done in medical appointments involving healthcare professionals (HCPs), people living with dementia (PLWD), and their companions. We recorded 44.5 hours of interactions across three settings, involving a variety of different healthcare professionals. I’ll present the data and the arguments that underpin our findings are so far, which are split into three areas: •Ways the patient is initially involved in decision-making – aspects of recipient design, especially involving pronoun use •Recognising signs of patient understanding around decision-making – a continuum of patient understanding, to which all participants contribute •Differences in how HCPs present information and the effect on decision-making We are currently in the process of finishing up the academic publications from this project, and consulting with stakeholders and people with lived experience of dementia on the best ways to disseminate our findings.
