Abstract

Karaoke is an everyday music activity, in which relationships among participants and the meanings of songs are clarified through interaction over time. As a result, participants are confronted in real time with the issue of what kind of song to sing and as what kind of person. This chapter presents a detailed analysis of participants’ acts of accounting for selecting songs in karaoke as commonly practiced in Japan, and clarifies the practical methods used to cope with the contingency of music selection. Through this, it is shown that participants, while taking into account the continuity of songs and their relations with other participants, render their own selections intelligible through accounts, thereby improvisationally organizing the social order of karaoke as a collaborative activity. In previous research, the concerns of karaoke participants have been theoretically characterized as dilemmas, such as the choice between expressing individuality within a group or becoming an anonymous presence within the collective (‘the karaoke dilemma’). In contrast, the authors identify the practical concerns which can be called ‘dilemmas’ that karaoke participants have to manage in situ.
