Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to the materials presented in this volume and explains how they constitute an alternative approach to the study of music in most social scientific and musicological contexts. It begins by briefly reviewing how an interest in the relationship between music and culture began to consolidate into a distinct area of study. It then looks at various theoretical treatments of that relationship in relation to ethnomusicology, socio-musicology, the study of subcultures, genres and styles, a growing concern with materiality and technology and what has been called the ‘new musicology’ with its strong focus on identity politics. After that, the move towards ethnomethodological studies of music is outlined as a reaction to these heavily theorised accounts, with an emphasis instead on how the production and consumption of music might be considered ‘work’, i.e., something that has to be actively accomplished in diverse real-world settings. The chapter concludes by outlining the contents of the book and how the various chapters relate to one another.
