Abstract
Young children are socialized in communicative environments in which partici- pants constantly negotiate what they are doing. This paper deals with the joint ac- complishment of storytellings in the light of interactive affordances that come with multimodally established multiactivity. The investigation is based on video-recor- dings of everyday interaction between adults and young children. The multimodal analysis sheds light on the intricate relationships between 'competing' social activi- ties and communicative projects. Only when participants' orientations to doing tell- ing are aligned, the social activity can be jointly accomplished. Although this might be a well-corroborated finding for everyday adult interaction; it has not been suffi- ciently adressed with regard to tellings in naturally occuring adult-child-interaction, the locus of children's development of narrative competence.
