Turn-taking in Social Interaction: 5-day workshop

Conversations are built out of turns at talk, whose orderly exchange serves as a fundamental form of social organization. This five-day workshop centers on this turn-taking organization from the perspective of Conversation Analysis. The workshop is organized in-person at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam (The Netherlands). The workshop covers the Sacks, Schegloff, & Jefferson (1974) turn-taking model and is based on the forthcoming book Turn-taking in Social Interaction by Raymond, Robinson, and Bolden (Cambridge University Press). The topics we will cover include:
- Turn-constructional units, transition relevance, and projectability
- Multi-unit turns
- Turn-allocation ordering and techniques
- Overlapping talk
- Silence and tun-taking
- Specialized turn-taking systems
The workshop features a mix of plenary sessions and small-group work on data provided by the facilitators, with emphasis on hands-on experience in the analysis of turn-taking in actual interactions. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to describe and defend the turn-taking model, to apply it toward the analysis of conversation, and to identify and pursue researchable turn-taking phenomena.
Who is this for?
Applications are welcome from all, but the workshop is geared toward those interested in pursuing the study of, and who have some prior familiarity with, Conversation Analysis. The application form will ask you to specify your experience/training to date. Spaces are limited.
How much will it cost?
The cost per applicant is €480. This includes workshop participation and catered coffee breaks. All other expenses are participants’ responsibilities. We will put those interested in sharing lodging with others in contact.
