Abstract
This paper presents a unique view of nursing practice through the combination of a little-used methodology in nursing, ethnomethodology, combined with a focus on sense-making to deepen understanding of the care given by nurses. This commentary reflects upon three aspects of this study which are considered of interest to the novice researcher: the use of ethnomethodology, non-participant shadowing as a data collection tool and the concept of sense-making applied to nursing.
