-|Abstract=In  this  paper we identify continuities  between  Goffman's analysis of stigma and  of  forms  of talk,  arguing that  conversational  competence and incompetence  among  the mentally  handicapped can  be  viewed  as occasioned accomplishments directed  towards  their attempts to manage their 'spoiled  identity' as stigmatized  persons.  Although conversations among  the mentally  handicapped  follow  the  structure  of ordinary conversational  interaction, conversations  between  them  and  others  evince more incompetence, suggesting that  their stigmatization is  itself partly accomplished in  and  through the  occasioned display of  conversational competence and incompetence.
