Abstract In this presentation, I offer some methodological reflections on the study of morphology as participants’ resource in social interaction. I begin by calling attention to morphology as a comparatively underexamined level of linguistic structure by conversation analysts and interactional linguists, in that it has yet to receive the same dedicated consideration that (for example) phonetics in interaction has received. I discuss a few potential reasons for this, highlighting in particular some of the methodological issues that analysts of real-time language use must consider in targeting morphology in action. I then introduce an ongoing study of suffixes/suffixation in Spanish—namely, diminutives (e.g., -ito/a; carro ‘car’ à carrito ‘little car’ [lit.]), augmentatives (e.g., -ote; abrazo ‘hug’ à abrazote ‘big hug’ [lit.]), and superlatives (e.g., ísimo/a; caro ‘expensive’ à carísimo ‘super expensive’ [lit.])—and review how the sequentiality of interaction can offer analysts a window into participants’ use of these morphological resources in the service of social action.
