|Abstract=Background
People with learning disabilities should be involved in conversations around funerals. Conversation-starter pictures were developed to support funeral conversations between people with a learning disability and support staff. How this resource is used in practice and how staff asks questions about the funeral pictures need exploration. This study explored how known-answer questions were posed and pursued when people with learning disabilities and support staff talk about funeral pictures.

Methods
Seven sessions with people with learning disabilities and support staff using funeral resources from an end-of-life care planning toolkit were video-recorded, transcribed, and analysed using Conversation Analysis. Known-answer questions were identified and analysed in two sessions involving the ‘Let's Talk About Funerals’ resource.

Findings
Staff asked known-answer questions where the recipient should provide a ‘correct’ answer. Questions were initially open, not indicating that a specific answer was needed. Staff pursued answers through follow-up questions targeting funeral terms and by minimally acknowledging the proposed responses. This led to missed opportunities to elaborate on these responses.

Conclusions
Support staff should be mindful about pursuing answers as it may close the conversation and not allow for exploration of the perspective of the person with a learning disability.

|Abstract=Georg Simmel, despite being a founding father of sociology, is often excluded from the list of the discipline’s principal founders. This neglect of Simmel’s work was perpetuated in ethnomethodology even though, like ethnomethodology, Simmel’s work concerns the minute organization of everyday interaction. It can, therefore, be of considerable importance for ethnomethodological inquiries. A group of ethnomethodologists devoted two years to reviewing Simmel’s corpus to identify and reveal resources that are useful for contemporary sociologists at large. What we discovered exceeded our expectations, and this article discusses some of these conceptual tools and theoretical resources, including praxis as the object of sociological investigations, objectivation practices, membership as degrees of commonness-and-strangeness, and the individual-“unity” relationship. We also review connections between Simmel, Husserl, Garfinkel and other scholars. Both Simmel and Garfinkel were relentless in their refusal to replace the dynamic character of social life with static theoretical constructs. We argue that thinking through their theories together fruitfully impedes sociologists in pursuing dualistic reasoning and re-orients them towards phenomena and issues of great sociological import that have remained largely overlooked, or have receded from view, in current sociology. We conclude that Simmel’s notion of “purely sociological” forms is perfectly consonant with the motivating interest of ethnomethodological researchers, who might employ his conceptual insights to address the lived objectivity of social phenomena empirically. At the same time, this also shows how ethnomethodology is concerned with foundational sociological issues. And, finally, it illuminates Simmel’s textured heritage beyond set, traditional readings of sociological thought and its history.

|Abstract=Beyond the established need for digital skills and a digital mindset, the role of workers on the ground in enabling digital transformation (DT) remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we recast DT as worker-centred practice adaptation with the case of auction sales of fine art and antiques shifting from mainly copresent to hybrid events during the COVID-19 pandemic, which contributed to a drastic acceleration of auction houses’ DT. With a longitudinal, sociomaterial study based on ethnographic fieldwork and video analysis, we show how auctioneers adapted their established practices in radically new and changing material configurations, to coordinate and order bids, to display the source of bids, and to pursue bidders. We show how hybrid copresence is created through new sociomaterial entanglements, reducing asymmetries between remote and copresent participants and bringing them together in a shared virtual environment encouraging participation and bidding. We theorise the empirical findings with three patterns of practice adaptation—imposing, transposing, and changing practices—correlated to the degree to which workers find partial or equivalent resources, or altogether different resources compared to previous material configurations. We integrate these patterns in a dynamic model of workers’ clusters of practices over time, providing a more fine-grained understanding of imbrication, the process through which material and social agencies interact and become interlocked into a durable structure. These finding shed new light on how the capabilities of new technologies are gradually enacted through practice adaptation and clusters of practices, ultimately supporting profound organisational restructuring like DT.

|Abstract=Rule-breaking occurs in healthcare settings and is typically pro-social. However, rule-breaking within a hospice setting has not been previously studied. This study investigates rule-breaking within hospice multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings using Conversation Analysis. Eight video and audio recordings of approximately 45-minute-long MDT meetings at one UK hospice were systematically analysed to identify how staff break rules. Rule-breaking was present throughout the data and was characterised by the minimisation of accountability through collectivising pronouns, extreme formulations and laughables. These three features supported rule-breakers to voice potentially transgressive opinions and recommendations that may have provoked criticism from MDT members. Rule-breakers were therefore able to evade social and professional sanctions whilst carrying out pro-social actions that benefit hospice patients, meeting participants, as well as the organisation and progression of the meeting itself. These findings contribute to the existing understanding of rule-breaking and have implications for how institutions understand and address it.

|Abstract=Background To facilitate shared decision-making (SDM), it is important that doctors clearly present the decision to be made and the available treatment options to the patient. This study explored how treatment options after first-line therapy were presented in advanced lung cancer consultations.

Methods Audio recordings of 12 advanced lung cancer consultations between patients, their companions and doctors in three Norwegian hospitals were transcribed and analysed using Conversation Analysis. Data were collected between November 2019 and March 2022.

Results Doctors employed three strategies when presenting treatment options to patients. These were (1) open option presentation, (2) selective option presentation and (3) recommended option presentation. Strategy (1) involved the doctor presenting all the possible treatment options in a balanced manner to the patient. With strategy (2), the doctor presented selected treatment options to the patient, and, for example, did not articulate the possibility of refraining from further therapy. Strategy (3) included the doctor’s explicit preference for certain treatment options.

Conclusions Strategies that doctors employ to present treatment options to patients facilitated SDM to different degrees, where some can challenge core principles of SDM, such as creating choice awareness. Doctors must be aware of their strategies to ensure that treatment options are presented to patients in a way that supports SDM.

|Abstract=Introduction. Communication challenges are among the main barriers for people with intellectual disabilities in accessing palliative care. They include inadequate skills among staff and difficulties with confirming understanding and around the presentation and assessment of symptoms. In-depth analysis of interactions between people with an intellectual disability and staff may shed light on these communicative challenges as well as facilitators. However, no studies have closely analysed the interactions between people with an intellectual disability and professionals within palliative care settings.

Methods and analysis. This protocol describes a pilot study assessing the feasibility and acceptability of conducting a Conversation Analysis study involving video-recording palliative care conversations between people with intellectual disabilities and professionals.

Three conversations between patients with an intellectual disability, their companions and palliative care staff will be video recorded in a UK hospice. Recordings will be transcribed and analysed using Conversation Analysis. Communication phenomena of interest and worth further exploration will be identified in collaboration with key stakeholders.

Ethics and dissemination. The study received a favourable opinion by a UK research ethics committee in February 2025. All participants must provide informed consent to take part in the study. It will be carefully assessed that potential participants with an intellectual disability have capacity to consent to take part. Accessible study information materials for participants with an intellectual disability are available (ie, easy-read and video).

Study findings will be disseminated in academic papers and conference presentations. Progress and findings will also be shared via social media and with relevant groups of people with intellectual disabilities, family carers, service providers and academics.

|Announcement text=This conference welcomes papers that take an interactional approach to particles in talk-in-interaction by analyzing recordings of social interaction. By particles we mean small uninflected lexical items such as interjections, modal particles and fixed multi-word expressions which do not contribute to the propositional content of an utterance but instead have interactional and discursive functions. They are used for such things as regulating the interaction, expressing the speaker’s stance, and marking coherence relations between utterances. In actual conversations, such functions may also be carried out by other ‘minimal resources’, such as non-lexical vocalizations, gestures and facial expressions, or by combinations of lexical and non-lexical resources. The conference thus also welcomes contributions that focus on embodied practices that may be used for the same types of action, or combinations of particles and non-lexical resources in multimodal gestalts.

We invite submissions for SemDial 2026 – LuffDial, the 30th Workshop on
the Semantics and Pragmatics of Dialogue at Loughborough University,
Loughborough UK. This conference brings together researchers working on
the semantics and pragmatics of dialogue across diverse disciplines,
including formal semantics, computational linguistics, artificial
intelligence, philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience.

Submissions are welcome from all areas presenting formal, computational,
and empirical approaches to the semantics and pragmatics of dialogue,

|Abstract=A summons is a social action that speakers use when trying to secure the recipient’sattention. The next expected turn to a summons is a response, and the lack of onefrom the addressee can be seen as socially problematic. Drawing on the principlesof conversation analysis and video-recorded Finnish family interactions, this paperexamines moments when children (three- to eight-year-olds) summon adults multi-ple times with address terms. This paper shows that when adults fail to respond tochildren’s initial summonses, children often repeat the summonses and upgrade/downgrade them with prosodic and embodied practices. Additionally, children mayutilise embodied actions to change the interactional space and establish favourableconditions to advance their interactional project.

|Abstract=This paper studies how children initiate telling-on sequences in kindergartens. The focus is on multimodal practices that children (6–7-year-olds) employ when engaging adults (teachers/caregivers) and peers in the telling-on sequences. The paper demonstrates how children utilise varying multimodal resources as well as display their moral stances in their telling-ons to recruit the adults’ intervention in the conflicts. The analyses also illustrate how the varying participation frameworks co-constructed by the participants have the potential to influence the organisation of the telling-ons and overall conflict resolution. The findings are based on video-recorded naturally occurring interactions in an English-speaking kindergarten in Finland. The data are analysed using the principles of multimodal conversation analysis.

 |Abstract=This study presents a phonetic analysis of repetitions occurring in other-initiated repair sequences in American English. Despite their lexical similarities, the repairs are shown to have 2 distinct phonetic patterns. These patterns correspond systematically with a sequential and interactional difference between fitted and disjunct trouble source turns. Trouble source turns that are fitted are repeated more loudly and have expanded pitch ranges, longer durations, and changes to the articulatory settings. Trouble source turns that are disjunct are repeated more quietly and have nonexpanded pitch ranges, shorter durations, and no major differences in articulation. These turns may provide an example of a way in which the levels of linguistic organization are split, with reproduction of lexico-syntax handling a possible problem in hearing, whereas the phonetics display an orientation to the sequential fittedness of the turn being repaired. This research highlights the interrelationship of phonetic structure and sequence organization.

 |Abstract=In pediatric medical visits, parents may assume the role of co-caregiver with clinicians. At times, parents challenge physicians’ authority to determine diagnoses and treatments for their children. The present study uses conversation analysis to examine parents’ accounts for their intrusions on medical authority in a corpus of 35 video-recorded pediatric neurology visits for overnight video-electroencephalogram monitoring. I show how parents can exploit their legitimate role as carers to challenge medical authority. Through invoking uncertainty in contexts where they have somehow challenged medical authority, parents can account for their conduct in ways that elide direct conflict with physicians and thereby minimize damage to the physician–family partnership.

 |Abstract=What counts as a preferred or dispreferred answer to a question and how can it be recognized? These questions have been widely discussed in conversation analysis in recent years, and some well-established diagnostic features of dispreferred answers have been identified. In this paper, we turn to a less well-established feature: gaze aversion. Kendrick & Holler (2017) have previously suggested that answers to polar questions that invert the question's polarity are accompanied by gaze aversion to a statistically significant extent. They argue that this gaze aversion indicates the answer's dispreferred status. We were able to replicate their findings using a large collection of English and German conversational data for polar question-answer sequences. However, we found an even stronger tendency for the answerer to avert their gaze during or after wh-questions, for which, per definition, the concept of preference in terms of polarity matching does not apply. Therefore, we extended the focus of our study to both polar and wh-questions and to alternative concepts of preference: type conformity and pragmatic preference. Only the latter was found to be associated with gaze aversion in a statistically significant way. Thus, we considered an alternative explanation for answerers' gaze aversion, also suggested by Kendrick and Holler (2017): answer complexity. Logistic regression analysis revealed that answer complexity, measured by the number of TCUs and absolute length, as well as hesitations, are significant predictors of gaze aversion, while none of the preference types are. These results demonstrate that gaze aversion does not index dispreference so much as it indexes that a complex answer is about to follow.

-|Announcement text=This conference welcomes papers that take an interactional approach to particles in talk-in-interaction by analyzing recordings of social interaction. By particles we mean small uninflected lexical items such as interjections, modal particles and fixed multi-word expressions which do not contribute to the propositional content of an utterance but instead have interactional and discursive functions. They are used for such things as regulating the interaction, expressing the speaker’s stance, and marking coherence relations between utterances. In actual conversations, such functions may also be carried out by other ‘minimal resources’, such as non-lexical vocalizations, gestures and facial expressions, or by combinations of lexical and non-lexical resources. The conference thus also welcomes contributions that focus on embodied practices that may be used for the same types of action, or combinations of particles and non-lexical resources in multimodal gestalts.

 |Abstract=Ordinary yet morally ambiguous and complex human-robot interactions (HRI) are anticipated to become more commonplace as sophisticated robots begin appearing in everyday life. Unlike the extreme, unfamiliar and high stakes ‘life-or-death’ binary choices seen in the Trolley Problem thought experiments of the self-driving car, ordinary interactions are instead quotidian and familiar. Yet these interactions can be interpreted very differently by different users and there are many possible better or worse responses. Responses by the robot can also steer the interaction in an irreversible and undesirable direction. In a theoretical context that primarily focuses on issues of safety and privacy in artificial intelligence, the ethics of ordinary interactions remains under-explored in HRI. In this article, ‘The Ubi Problem’ study poses twenty-six commonplace scenarios that a reading companion robot, ‘Ubi’ and its client, a young child that it is reading to, would likely encounter in the open environment of a public library. After viewing the visual storyboards of these scenarios and through a participatory focus group discussion, expectations of what Ubi should do were drawn out and examined collectively. Findings from this study suggest that these ordinary interactions pose a number of under-explored ethical challenges in HRI. However, the most salient aspects of these challenges can be visualized, examined, and anticipated using the research strategy of ‘The Ubi Problem’. In turn, this suggests that robot designers and communities employing advanced social robots can rely on the approach of ‘The Ubi Problem’ to improve their foresight and to avoid costly pitfalls.

 |Abstract=This work documents how roboticists’ skilled conversational expertise is unavoidably constrained and guided as it is translated into rule-based robots through specific programming tools. To shed light on the social construction of “social” robots, it documents the (material) agency of tools used to script or program robots within the technology company Aldebaran (formerly Softbank Robotics Europe), which specialized in manufacturing and programming the social robots Pepper and NAO and their conversational AI. Conducted over the course of several years among roboticists, this ethnography investigates how programming tools—their variables, publicly exposed events, hierarchy of information, available data streams, and documentation—facilitated the crafting of specific forms of talk (among many) for Pepper. Two types of constraints are examined: those encountered by roboticists when crafting disfluencies and filled pauses (“uhh”) in Pepper’s speech, and those faced when enabling the robot to “continue speaking” after a silence. These constraints produced “paths of least resistance” toward specific designs for the robot, which, in turn, impacted its competence in situated interaction with “end users”. Crucially, these constraints were not inevitable technical limits, but rather resulted from specific assumptions about language and, in particular, what “conversing with a robot” entails. In other words, roboticists’ tools led to the embedding of linguistic practices and a specific organization of talk into their robot. The study concludes with the continued significance of these “paths of least resistance” (and their underlying assumptions about “what conversing is”) in the era of chatbots based on generative AI.

 |Abstract=Rule-breaking occurs in healthcare settings and is typically pro-social. However, rule-breaking within a hospice setting has not been previously studied. This study investigates rule-breaking within hospice multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings using Conversation Analysis. Eight video and audio recordings of approximately 45-minute-long MDT meetings at one UK hospice were systematically analysed to identify how staff break rules. Rule-breaking was present throughout the data and was characterised by the minimisation of accountability through collectivising pronouns, extreme formulations and laughables. These three features supported rule-breakers to voice potentially transgressive opinions and recommendations that may have provoked criticism from MDT members. Rule-breakers were therefore able to evade social and professional sanctions whilst carrying out pro-social actions that benefit hospice patients, meeting participants, as well as the organisation and progression of the meeting itself. These findings contribute to the existing understanding of rule-breaking and have implications for how institutions understand and address it.

It investigates members' methods to bring about change within their shared (life) world. It examines how, as part of an extended project of action, one agreement made early on is continually re-evoked, used for accounting purposes, and serves to prepare specific actions. This “item of objectivated knowledge” ties together a series of situations. Thereby, members create shared expectations which serve as resources to solve local action problems and which can be revoked once those problems no longer exist.
