|Abstract=Repetition is often associated with traditional teaching drills. However, it has been documented how repetitions are exploited by learners themselves (Duff, 2000). In a study of immersion classroom conversations, it was found that playful recyclings were recurrent features of young learners’ second language repertoires. Such joking events were identified on the basis of the participants’ displayed amusement, and they often involved activity-based jokes (Lampert, 1996) and meta pragmatic play, that is, joking about how or by whom something is said. Two types of recyclings: intertextual play and role appropriations were both important features in informal classroom entertainment and in the formation of a community of learners (cf. Rogoff, 1990). In a broad sense, both types of joking contained subversive elements in that they created play zones or ‘time-out’ (cf. Goffman, 1959; Jefferson, 1996) within classroom activities. Moreover, role appropriations were subversive in that they inverted classroom hierarchies.
|Abstract=The incorporation of materials from the previous speaker in subsequent speaker talk has been variably characterised as repetition (Tannen, 1987), format tying (M. Goodwin, 1990), resonance (Du Bois, 2014) and so forth (henceforth “resonance”). Resonance has been shown to be a pervasive feature of everyday talk-in-interaction. This paper, with data from Mandarin Chinese and American English, shows first that resonance can manifest in multiple modalities, namely morphosyntax, prosody and embodied actions, often simultaneously. Second, it will be shown that the next speaker often does this in the service of creating an amusing effect, or conversational humour. It is proposed that multimodal resonance with amusing effects is an uplifting device in conversation that has a unique impact on the way interaction is managed. As such, investigating such a practice can further our understanding of resonance as a pervasive interactional phenomenon and how multimodality is deployed for coherent courses of action.
The University of Siegen is a modern university with an international orientation and a focus on interdisciplinary research. It currently has around 15,000 students and covers a range of research fields from the humanities, social and economic sciences to natural sciences, engineering and life sciences. |Abstract=The present study examines patterns of users’ first turns in their interaction with a service chatbot developed by a team in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Sogang University, South Korea. The user’s first turn is where the user produces their initial request to the chatbot based on a task prompt that is given to them. This is a crucial site that can project the trajectory of the conversational dialogue in the next turns. The data for this study is a corpus of 456 conversational dialogues between human users and the service chatbot for the task of scheduling (e.g., creating/deleting/changing schedules). Analyses reveal three main patterns emerging from users’ first turns: (1) naming main request; (2) prefacing another request; and (3) aggregating task prompt. These patterns are described as users’ sense-making practices which demonstrate their understanding of the task prompt presented to them as well as how they interpret the underlying mechanism of the chatbot. The first and second patterns, in particular, are illustrative of discrepancies in assumptions between human users and chatbot developers. The study provides practical implications for chatbot developers and discusses the utility of Conversation Analysis (CA) as a methodology to investigate human-chatbot interaction.
|Abstract=Storytelling poses a great challenge to second language (L2) speakers whose limited target language repertoires make the possibility of repairs omnipresent. Note, however, that repairs are likely to interfere with the progressivity of the storytelling. Therefore, their presence may influence the trajectory of narrative content and, by extension, the stories’ topical coherence of the story. Thus, it is crucial to examine how repairs are managed in multilingual storytelling and what interpretive work is involved in resuming stories. The present study examines repair sequences in multilingual storytelling to explicate how L2 storytellers maintain the coherence of their stories through repair sequences. The analysis is based on a data corpus collected from four groups of Korean learners of English who participated in weekly speech sessions. The findings are organized into two sections that manifest two different types of repairs, one for linguistic matters and the other for narrative content. This analysis provides realistic descriptions of the nature of the challenges L2 participants face in managing multiple turns and constructing narrative content in multilingual storytelling.
