|Abstract=This article examines the use of ''fuck'' and ''fucking'' in Danish, with a focus on their interactional functions for assessing. Data consist of 76 cases found in informal Danish conversations, analyzed within the framework of Interactional Linguistics. ''Fuck'' functions as a reactive interjection that prefaces various types of clauses. However, ''fuck'' followed by a copula clause develops an assessment out of a telling. Followed by ''hvor'' ‘how’ and an adjective, ''fuck'' performs agreeing assessment. ''Hvad fuck'' ‘what the fuck’ may occur in questions. ''Fucking'' is commonly used in copula clause assessments but also within noun phrases when no response is elicited. The study concludes that the use of ''fuck'' and ''fucking'' in Danish differs from their use in English, but also from the Danish swearword ''fanden'' ‘the devil, damn’. The conclusions indicate that interactional functions and constructions are an important factor for understanding the pragmatics of borrowing and swearing.
|Abstract=The chapters of this volume have taken important first steps toward the ultimate goal that all contributors to this volume share: The creation of comprehensive grammars of talk-in-interaction in specific languages, which are based on, and true to, how language is used in interaction. In this discussion chapter, we extract the main new findings of the contributions to the volume, discuss how these findings might challenge received notions used in grammars, and make suggestions about the next steps that should be taken toward a truly interactional grammar.
|Abstract=This chapter explores constructions with the copula verb ''er'' ‘is’ in Danish. Practices employing zero copula assessments, stressed copulas and cases where syntax requires overt copula are described. Data are informal Danish interactions.
The constructions are analyzed using Conversation Analysis and Interactional Linguistics. It is found that in reduced or zero copula clauses, the features of the action may depend on the predicate phrase rather than the copula. Stressed er marks a turn as asserting or contrasting with something that came before. The syntactic context requiring overt copula may project turn-ending.
The aim is to discuss how the constructions studied are intertwined with other aspects of grammar and how they may fit into an interactional grammar like the Danish project ''Samtalegrammatik.dk''.
|Abstract=This study investigates the use of the swear word expression ''hva fanden'' ('what the devil') in Danish talk-in-interaction by analysing 17 cases using Conversation Analysis and Interactional Linguistics. ''Hva fanden'' occurs in information-seeking actions, which include repair (i.e., word search and other-initiated repair) and requests for information. ''Hva fanden'' conveys the speaker's non-access to certain information, in word search without stance-taking but in other functions displaying a negative stance to e.g. a referent. ''Hva fanden'' also occurs in quoted usage, where it performs assessment by framing some conduct as worthy of a response with a negative stance, with variation in their responses (i.e., immediate or none). Through detailed analyses of interaction, the study contributes to knowledge on swearing in interaction.

|Year=2015

|Abstract=“Like that” – some prosodic, syntactic, and lexical features of a Danish urban dialect in Aarhus This dissertation presents interactional linguistic functions of a number of prosodic, syntactic and lexical features in a Danish urban dialect. The dissertation stands on the shoulders of four decades of research in emerging linguistic varieties in urban environ- ments with high linguistic diversity in major northern European cities. However, unlike recent years’ Danish studies in the field, the dissertation takes a dialect-centered approach to the linguistic variation. It contributes to the field of research with microanalyses of interactive functions of specific linguistic features. Drawing on methods from Conversation Analysis and Interactional Linguistics, grammatical analyses of prosody and syntax are used as the basis for interactional analyses of functions of the individual features. A total of six features are described: a prosodic feature which I call ‘Strong Finals’, a syntactic feature which I call ‘V3’ and four lexemes with interjectional functions: ‘ikkå’, ‘eow’, ‘lak’, ‘yani’ and an interjectional use of the personal pronoun ‘dig’ (Eng. ‘you’). The prosodic feature Strong Finals is defined by three acoustic criteria: vowel lengthening, non-falling intonation, and increased volume on syllables which occur in sentence or clause-final positions, which in Standard Danish would be unstressed Five interactional functions for Strong Finals are described: In listings, Strong Finals can support the projection that an element is part of a longer list or it can support specification of the order of events; in conditional sentences, Strong Finals can support the projection of a particularly important argument and/or function as an invitation for other participants to contribute; before reported speech, Strong Finals can support the projection of the reported speech or the climax of a story; in questions, Strong Finals can support the recruitment to more than affirmation. The five functions all have to do with the projection ‘more to come’, and in the dissertation the common function name ‘projection device’ is suggested. The syntactic feature V3 is defined as sentences where the verb occupies the topological third position of the sentence, which deviates from the V2 structure in Standard Danish. V3 is found in sentences initiated by tense adverbials, by the cohesion marker ‘så’ (Eng. ‘then’ or ‘so’), by discourse adverbs (e.g. ‘actually'), by location adverbials, by the sentence object or in conditional sentences. Functionally, three interactional environments are described: In sentences initiated by time adverbs or ‘så’, V3 can support the organization of a story’s sequence of events; in conditional sentences and in discourse adverb-initiated sentences, V3 can support a claim of epistemic authority; and in location 6 adverbial- or object-initiated sentences, V3 can support the introduction or reframing of a referent in a story. The three functions are often found in storytelling. Five lexemes, ‘ikkå’, ‘eow’, ‘lak’, ‘yani’ and ‘dig’ are described as interjections. They can all be found in the extra-sentential position and neither can occupy the central grammatical roles as subject, object, verb, adjectival or sentence adverbial. For each lexeme, one to three interactional functions are described: ‘ikkå’ can either support the request for an extension from the recipient, support a speaker in keeping the floor, or support a claim of epistemic authority; ‘eow’ can support the pin-pointing of a possible solution to a problem; ‘lak’ can support a blame for the lack of application of knowledge; ‘yani’ can support the expression of asymmetric knowledge relationships; and ‘dig’ can support negotiations for the right to participate. The above prosodic, syntactic and lexical features have been selected for description because they all deviate from the grammar of Standard Danish talk-in-interaction. The dissertation argues that they are part of a linguistic variety which can be described as a dialect. The features are used in Western and Southern Aarhus in residential areas characterized by linguistic diversity, but they do not exhibit interlanguage-like qualities. We know this for the following reasons: first, they are used by speakers with Danish as their first language and, second, they take the same forms across speakers and time. The dissertation’s analyses are based on recordings of natural interaction in everyday activities collected during a multi-site fieldwork study in youth clubs, high schools, and homework clubs in 2012 and 2017-18. Additionally, data from other researchers’ collections in 2002 and 2006 are included. The data are compiled in a corpus available to other researchers. The corpus consists of audio and video recordings, partial transcriptions, and annotation of a number of linguistic features that deviate from standard Danish grammar. None of the dialectal features perform semantic or pragmatic functions on their own, they are always found together with other linguistic features that contribute to the same function. The fact that the features are always complementary, in my view, strengthens the argument that the urban dialect is not a special language or a slang form that must be translated for outsiders, as it is otherwise often presented in media coverage of the research on urban dialects.
|Abstract=Studies of urban dialects in the Germanic languages show a development where the otherwise strict V2 syntax rules are supplemented with V3 syntax in specific syntactic and social contexts. Based on recordings of naturally occurring interaction in multilingual areas of Aarhus, Denmark, this paper adds to existing research with an interactional collection analysis of actions supporting V3. It describes six structural subtypes of V3 characterised by different adverbial and object material in first position and shows how the subtypes are connected to three interactional resources used in organising storytelling, claiming epistemic authority and reframing referents or discourse. V3 is often used when contrasting one type of information with another. It does not result in a different semantic meaning, rather it existing possible meanings that could also be emphasised by extra wording or multiple sentences. In the discussion, I argue that the extra syntactic options allow speakers to say more with fewer words by pushing the limits of the rather strict V2 syntax of Standard Danish.
|Abstract=The Danish pronoun ''de'' and its inflections are traditionally described as 3rd person plural, but, as this article demonstrates, it is also used as a gender neutral 3rd person singular pronoun. As this pronoun – termed singular ''de'' – has not been documented or described in the literature thus far, the purpose of this article is to provide a grammatical description and analysis of singular ''de'' and its referential use in interaction. This is based on 104 occurrences of singular ''de'' in naturally occurring conversation. It is found that singular ''de'' is used with both generic and specific reference, and that interlocutors may use singular ''de'' to avoid indexing gender and orienting to it as a relevant topic in talk-in-interaction (gender-unspecified reference) or to index the referent’s gender as neither male nor female (gender-specified reference). The article also parallels between singular ''de'' and English singular ''they'', as well as sociolinguistic variation in the use of singular ''de'' which could be topics for future studies.
|Abstract=The main subjects of this study are compliments and flirtation in written discourse. The data of the paper are text messages that two young women exchanged while dating during a period of two and a half months. Since there are more than a thousand messages, two weeks have been selected for this analysis. To examine the data, the method of conversation analysis has been used, in particular compliment theory. Compliments differ from other actions in as much as agreement and accept are not the preferred actions to follow since self-praise is dispreferred. Theories of flirtation are presented as well, and the notion of imagined togetherness. Five extracts of the data are analysed, focusing on relevant characteristics and phenomena of each extract, such as imagined togetherness, compliment structure, irony and emojis. The paper concludes that compliments are exchanged within sequences that also contain everyday subjects; and features such as suspension dots and emojis play a crucial part in the understanding and interpretation of the messages.
|Abstract=This article is centered around the discussion on the relationship between spoken and written language in online written discourse, which it investigates from the perspective of interactional grammar (“samtalegrammatik”). The purpose of the article is to highlight certain shortcomings in the discussion as it has played out so far and to argue for a different approach to it, inspired by conversation analysis. After an introduction to the discussion, a CA-inspired analysis of a phenomenon of oral interactional grammar, namely questions in the declarative used in threads in two Facebook groups, is presented. It is concluded that using the method is possible and that the phenomenon investigated works in the same way on Facebook as it does in oral interaction. The article discusses what perspectives these findings give on the discussion on the relationship between speech and writing in online written discourse. Finally, it is recommended that more investigations of this sort are conducted, among other things to refine the method and to further investigate what insights it can provide on the relationship between spoken and written language online.
