Ethnomethodology – the study of practical methods of action and reasoning, i.e., 'ethno-methods' – and conversation analysis – the study of 'talk-in-interaction' – are grounded in detailed investigations of how people in all manner of sites and settings organise their activities. This short course, which will run over two days with 10 hours of work together, will provide an advanced, hands-on introduction to the unique way both Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis approach the study of social practices. This will be done using 'tutorial problems' centred on the analysis of interactional data collected as part of small-scale fieldwork exercises. Among other things, the short course will look at how ethnographic research, observation, interviewing and survey data can be repurposed, that is, put to work in alternate ways when pursued ethnomethodologically. The foundational ethnomethodological contributions of Garfinkel and Sacks will be the primary focus.
|Announcement text=Dear Colleagues,

We are excited to announce that New Developments in Ethnomethodology will be held at the Centre for Criminology and Socio-Legal Studies (CrimSL) at the University of Toronto, July 7-9.

New Developments is a series dedicated, among other things, to platforming graduate students and early career scholars working in sociology and its cognate disciplines from an Ethnomethodological perspective. It brings together ECRs and mid-career scholars, with an aim to producing new collaborations, networks, and opportunities to seek funding to support Ethnomethodologically informed ECRs.

Previous meetings have been held at Liverpool University, UK (2018), Gothe University Frankfurt, Germany (2019), Gothenburg University, Sweden (2023) and Sogang University, Korea (2024). 2025 will mark the first occasion New Developments has been hosted in North America.

The University of Toronto is perhaps not the first institution that comes to mind when thinking about Ethnomethodology. However, there is a history at the institution that extends several decades and generations of Ethnomethodologists. The University has, at various times, been home to Dorothy Smith, Michael Lynch, Ian Hacking, James Heap, Peter Eglin, Gus Brannigan, and other noted Ethnomethodologists. Harold Garfinkel visited UofT and CrimSL in 1980 and 1981 and had considerable impact on CrimSL scholars. This meeting will aim to recapture some of the energy and excitement of those early days of Ethnomethodology, as well as showcasing Ethnomethodological inquiry to scholars currently working at UofT.

There is no cost to attend New Developments. Registration will be required and details on how to register and accommodate options will be circulated shortly. We are working to obtain funding to offset costs for travel and accommodations for graduate students and post-doctoral researchers. Attendees who would benefit from financial support will be asked to identify themselves in the registration process, and notification of the amount of support available will be circulated in early 2025.

Questions about the event can be sent to patrick.watson@utoronto.ca. Please stay tuned for the registration and abstract submission site to go live in the coming week.

Best wishes,
|Abstract=During the 2019–20 English football season the Football Association, Heads Together mental health charity, and Public Health England, launched the Heads Up campaign to raise fans’ awareness about mental health issues. This research examines the campaign’s delivery and implementation of well-being resources and messaging from a fan-perspective within a stadium and the shift into a media-mediated campaign during the pandemic. Our methods included ethnographic observation of the campaign in and around a football stadium, and analyses of the campaign’s promotional videos, matchday programmes, TV and radio coverage, and social media posts. Our findings reveal positive aspects of the campaign methods, which included the delivery of a football-oriented and coherent set of accessible resources geared towards normalising mental health conversations. However, there were several missed opportunities in delivery linked to limited control over the deployment of campaign resources and a lack of future planning to build on the campaigns initial impact.
|Abstract=This chapter provides an account of fieldwork and discusses the working-through of different modes of reflexivity accompanying (re)entering and (re)leaving the field. The focus, an ‘intermission’ in fieldwork; how it shapes the field and is a moment of transition in reflexive thinking. The details are from an ethnographic study of homeless outreach workers in Manhattan. The discussion is of realising the potentialities of the boundaries of this fieldsite – which are anthropologically clear (geographically and temporally) but sociologically blurry (exploring ‘Homelessness’ as a subject) – and are affected by different modes of reflexivity. This emphasises the significance of an ‘intermission’ as a time to develop sociological reasoning and review how ‘the field’ might be getting done. The chapter discusses how ‘intermissions’ provide the opportunity to engage in at least three modes of reflexivity: Anthropological/Ethnographic, Philosophical, and Ethnomethodological. This addresses how leaving the field, geographically, temporarily or permanently, and reflexively, can assist the researcher in seeing the field and the social phenomena. The idea of an ‘intermission’ is not intended as a methodological prescription but a conceptual tool for thinking reflexively with ‘initial observations’, and further, as an ongoing process of reflexivity and analysis throughout the research process both in and out of the field. The purpose of this chapter is to explore how leaving the field in combination with such reflexive concepts might enable the researcher to identify social resources, social phenomena, and distinguish this from preconceived notions; making way for a deep engagement with the ethnographic method, the fieldsite, and fieldnotes as data.
