|Abstract=Studies of normal and atypical prosodic development show that some children learning English invariably locate the main prosodic prominence at the end of the utterance, even though the main focus of information may come earlier. A case study is presented of David, a speech- and language-impaired child from the West Midlands of England who displayed this prosodic pattern at the age of 5, but not a year later. Since marked prosodic differences exist between the regional accent that he is exposed to and other varieties of English, David's prosodic behaviour is compared to that of adults and children speaking the same West Midlands variety. The analysis draws on techniques developed within conversation analysis to explore the relationship between prosodic detail and interactional behaviour. It is argued that, in order to maintain conversational interaction, children such as David may be using their prosodic resources to delimit unambiguously the end of their turn at talk, and that this is at the expense of clearly highlighting important or focused items of information in the utterance.
|Abstract=One aim of current research into talk-in-interaction is to identify the resources that enable recipients to monitor the course of a turn in progress in order to project its upcoming completion. This issue is addressed through analysis of instances of overlapping talk, focusing on their design—that is, their particular prosodic and other linguistic characteristics; their placement—in other words, where precisely they occur in relation to the turn being overlapped; and the subsequent behavior of the coparticipants. Phonetic analysis is combined with interactional techniques developed within Conversation Analysis, to warrant the relevance of categories by reference to the behavior of the participants themselves. As French and Local (1983) found, for an incoming to be treated as turn-competitive, it has to be designed with relatively high pitch and loud volume. These turn-competitive incomings are positioned within the turn in progress, and before the final major accent. By contrast, overlapping incomings positioned after the major accent are not designed as or treated as turn-competitive. On the basis of this analysis, we can define transition relevance place (TRP) as the space between the TRP-projecting accent of the current turn and the onset of the next turn. TRP-projecting accents are identifiable on independent grounds, being phonetically distinct from non-TRP-projecting accents. They thus provide a robust resource for participants to monitor the upcoming completion of the turn.
|Abstract=Sue Peppé’s article (2009) surveys key issues relevant to the clinical assessment and management of prosodic aspects of spoken communication. In the first part of this commentary, we demonstrate one approach to assessment, which involves close analysis
of the use of prosody in spontaneous talk-in-interaction. This approach derives from one pioneered by David Crystal, supplemented by techniques drawn from Conversation Analysis which allow for greater precision and objectivity in the characterization of prosodic meaning. The type of analysis is illustrated with data froman 11-year-old boy with severe autism. In the second part, the same data are used to illustrate how phonetic, phonological and interactional notations can be combined in a single transcription. It is suggested that this notational system can be of value in highlighting how mutual understanding can be achieved through prosody, even when one participant is not using a recognized prosodic system. The two parts of the commentary are linked by the notion that a prime function of prosodic features is to contribute to the management of turn-taking.
|Abstract=Research has so far failed to demonstrate how, or even that, young children progressively acquire a set of tones or pitch accents that have distinct meanings or functions. From recent work in the phonetics of conversation, there is some evidence that a speaker’s choice of tone can be accounted for by reference to the tone used in the previous speaker’s turn rather than by reference to an intonational lexicon. This view is supported by analysis of interactions between Robin, aged 19–21 months, and his mother. Robin systematically uses a repeat of his mother’s tone to display alignment with the ongoing activity, while using a different, contrasting tone when initiating a new action or sequence. It is suggested that such tonal repetition and contrast are fundamental to children’s learning of English intonation.
|Abstract=In order to explore the influence of context on the phonetic design of talk-in-interaction, we investigated the pitch characteristics of short turns (insertions) that are produced by one speaker between turns from another speaker. We investigated the hypothesis that the speaker of the insertion designs her turn as a pitch match to the prior turn in order to align with the previous speaker’s agenda, whereas non-matching displays that the speaker of the insertion is non-aligning, for example to initiate a new action. Data were taken from the AMI meeting corpus, focusing on the spontaneous talk of first-language English participants. Using sequential analysis, 177 insertions were classified as either aligning or non-aligning in accordance with definitions of these terms in the Conversation Analysis literature. The degree of similarity between the pitch contour of the insertion and that of the prior speaker’s turn was measured, using a new technique that integrates normalized F0 and intensity information. The results showed that aligning insertions were significantly more similar to the immediately preceding turn, in terms of pitch contour, than were non-aligning insertions. This supports the view that choice of pitch contour is managed locally, rather than by reference to an intonational lexicon.
|Abstract=We describe and exemplify a methodology for providing an integrated account of the communicative function of parametric phonetic detail and its relationshipwith interactional organization. We exemplify our analytic approach by documenting two different phonetic designs of stand-alone ‘so’ in a corpus of recorded American English telephone conversations. These two designs - which encompass particular loudness, pitch and laryngeal characteristics - correlate with different communicative functions and have different consequences for the interactional-sequential organization of the talk. We argue that if phonology is to be truly concerned with function and linguistic contrast, we need to induce those functions and domains of contrast from a thoroughgoing phonetic and sequential analysis of talk-in-interaction.
|Abstract=The analysis of language use in real-world contexts poses particular methodological challenges. We codify responses to these challenges as a series of methodological imperatives. To demonstrate the relevance of these imperatives to clinical investigation, we present analyses of single episodes of interaction where one participant has a speech and/or language impairment: atypical prosody, echolalia and dysarthria. We demonstrate there is considerable heuristic and analytic value in taking this approach to analysing the organization of interaction involving individuals with a speech and/or language impairment.
|Abstract=This study investigates prototypically “turn-final” pitch features (fall-to-low)
at points of possible turn-completion where the same speaker continues. It
is shown that points of possible turn-completion accompanied by fall-to-
low and followed by same-speaker continuation only rarely engender
incoming talk. It is shown that such points are frequently accompanied by
nonpitch talk-projecting phonetic features and that the presence of these
features may constrain the nature of any incoming talk. The results of the
study should serve as caution to researchers with regard to an overempha-
|Abstract=This article examines one of the ways in which matters of truth, appropriateness, and acceptability are raised and managed within the course of everyday conversation. Using the methodology of conversation analysis, we show that by repeating what another participant has said and doing so with a high rise-fall intonation contour, a speaker claims that the repeated talk is “wrong” and in need of correction. There is an incongruity between two versions of the world—the one presented in the repeated speaker's talk and the one the repeating speaker knows or believes to be true, appropriate, or acceptable. The ensuing sequences are routinely expanded and morally charged as the participants jostle for epistemic or moral authority over the matter at hand and work to repair the incongruity (even if, in the end, they agree to disagree).
|Abstract=How can lexical repetition help in guiding someone to do something? We take the example of sports climbing. Climbing demands complex bodily movements to reach holds and propel the body upwards. It is harder for visually impaired athletes, since they cannot see in advance where holds are located, so guides help them. There is a great deal of interplay between the (a) affordances of the climbing wall; (b) the guides’ understanding of what the climbers are touching; and (c) the formatting, timing, and delivery of their instructions. We find that guides use carefully timed and prosodically calibrated lexical repetition (for example, up up up!) to adjust both the duration and direction of the climbers’ ongoing movements and to make sure that they get to their planned holds. Data are in Italian with English translation.
|Abstract=This article examines the occupational practices of four ambulant vendors (AVs) over a 20-day period, as they board, occupy, and alight trains to make a living in the popular economy. It captures for the first time some of the multimodal communicative practices they deploy to present an engaging sales pitch, attempt to convert passengers into prospects and sustain their livelihoods on the move. A multimodal pragmatics analysis of their sales pitch as video-recorded by the AVs reveals three clear stages marked by body motion in alignment with other bodily and verbal activities to capture the audience as they zero in on the product attributes. The article highlights the dexterity and professionalism of these workers in combining different modalities to augment their presence and chances of securing sales as they navigate the challenges of the unequal working conditions they inhabit as captured from a novel first-person perspective.
|Abstract=The establishment of social distancing guidance during the first months of the Covid19 pandemic in the UK made behaviour in public spaces open to scrutiny, as observed in reports of lockdown (non)compliance in different types of media. This paper analyses a collection of 13 calls to BBC phone-ins where people publicly admit to breaking the lockdown. It offers an interactional analysis of the discursive practices with which callers account for their breach and build their moral personas while orienting to the accountability concerns that arise in their interaction with hosts, guest experts, and the participating audience on-air. Callers’ accounts were found to be extended objects combining different action components with which they present their licences to breach, list their harm-mitigating strategies, and construct their decisions as informed and common-sensical in the light of the moral dilemmas and disruption that the lockdown introduced to their ordinary lives.
|Abstract=This study makes an original contribution to the understanding of sound patterns in interaction by investigating glottalization and linking at word boundaries in naturally occurring talk. Specifically, the study shows how speakers of British English make use of the contrast between glottalized and linked vowel-fronted TCU boundaries in multi-unit turns. Second TCUs whose initial vowel is joined to the last sound of the first TCU routinely either extend or elaborate on the social action of the first TCU. Second TCUs whose initial vowel is glottalized routinely accomplish new actions that are distinct from those accomplished by the first TCU. After giving an overview of a wider collection of cases, the analysis focuses on yeah/no responding turns.
|Abstract=This paper illustrates the methodological contributions of Conversation Analysis-Interactional Linguistics to the study of the phonetic and prosodic design of interactional phenomena using conversational corpora. It presents as a case study the analysis of a collection of 74 “(Oh) (my) God” interjections from 3 hours of the CallFriend corpus.
We argue that to fully describe conversational practices, an initial exhaustive qualitative approach is required that jointly incorporates interactional and parametric phonetic analyses, so as to better inform how data is to be grouped according to interactionally-relevant criteria (i.e. position, composition, and action) and what phonetic-prosodic features can get eventually measured and compared. This study demonstrates how phonetic-prosodic phenomena that quantitative results may treat as outliers or which get hidden in the sea of decontextualised aggregate data are in fact speakers’ orientations to particular moment-by-moment interactional demands of the local context and thus have an import and organisation of their own.
|Abstract=Research in conversation analysis has shown that speech rhythm is a relevant parameter for turn-taking amongst native speakers of British English. Not only is individual participants’ speech rhythmically structured, but rhythmic patterns also continue across speaker transitions. Participants employ such rhythmic integration as an interactional resource. By rhythmically integrating next turns into prior turns they display conversational alignment with previous speakers, whereas non-integration is treated as noticeable
and non-default. British English has a tendency towards stress-timing, that is, stressed syllables occur at roughly regular intervals in time, with great variation in syllable duration. This paper investigates whether cross-transitional speech rhythm also occurs when speakers of primarily syllable-timed languages, whose syllable duration is less varied, are in conversation with speakers of primarily stress-timed languages. Do speakers of syllable-timed backgrounds integrate their turns rhythmically into the stress-timed pattern?
If so, how are those continuations realised? The data show that rhythmic patterns are indeed continued across speaker transitions, however, only in up to half of all turn transitions, and predominantly only for the first stressed syllable of the turn. This suggests that incoming speakers of the syllable-timed language initially comply with the tendency towards rhythmic alignment before continuing ‘in their own time’.
|Abstract=The study investigates horse-directed vocalizations in English and German. A corpus of
human-horse activities contains clicks, trills, and variants of /ho:/. Horse-directed vocalizations show much phonetic and prosodic variation, which makes them adjustable to local interactional contexts. The largest group are clicks (lateral, dental, bilabial), which are used to ask horses to move faster. Trills (bilabial, alveolar) optionally end in alveolar stops. Their duration, intonation, and overall pitch vary considerably. German and English speakers use trills for opposite interactional purposes (slowing down vs. speeding up). /ho:/-type vocalizations vary with regard to first consonants, vowels, final consonants, duration, and intonation. /ho:/-variants are used to calm and/or slow horses down. Unlike non-lexical vocalizations in human talk, horse-directed vocalizations have specific, conventionalized meanings.
Background and status
The EMCA bibliography was initiated and has been maintained by Paul ten Have on the EMCA news website since the early 1990s. His bibliographies - as of July 2014 are available on this site.

This wiki was established to digitize that bibliography and make it available alongside an updatable wiki building on the wealth of EMCA resources Paul assembled on his site.

Scope
The bibliography lists academic work that is based mainly on EM/CA methods and approaches and/or positions its findings directly in relation to past or current work in Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis. If you are unsure whether an item fits this description and would like to discuss it, please contact The EMCA wiki Admins.

Adding to the bibliography
Adding bibliography entries is the best way to help build and maintain this resource. as well as keep the new ones up to date. You need a user account to do this, so please get in touch if you can help in this way and we will make you one.

Import
* You can import small BibTeX files into EMCA wiki by clicking the 'Add to the bibliography' link in the sidebar.
* If you have a large amount of EMCA-related bibliographic data (preferably in BibTeX format) that you would like to contribute, please [mailto:bibadmins@emcawiki.net get in touch]].

Digitizing old bibliographies
We are currently digitizing the old bibliographies from Paul ten Have's site. If you click on the 'discussion' link on the top of each of the bibliography pages, it will provide you with a link to the old bibliography and an indication of which areas of the bibliography currently need work.
|Abstract=In everyday interaction, participants speak on their own behalf but may temporarily speak as or on behalf of a figure (i.e. past or fictional self, others or objects). This practice of ‘animation’ can be continued or extended by co-participants in responsive position, resulting in co-animation (Cantarutti, 2020) of the same figure. Animation relies on the successful ascription of roles, participation framework shifts and projected stances to either the here-and-now of interaction or the there-and-then of animated content. In turn, the recognition of a response as a co-animation requires the creation of similarity between animated contributions. Through a multimodal interactional linguistic analysis of 89 cases of co-animation, this paper discusses how participants jointly solve these interactional contextualisation ‘problems’ smoothly through multimodal gestalts of lexico-grammatical, prosodic and gestural detail.
|Abstract=Without units, there are no boundaries; and without boundaries, there are no units. Traditional linguistics takes units such as sentences and intonation phrases for granted, treating them as static. Interactional linguistics has reconfigured many of these units, treating them as emergent, focusing on their evolution in time, and how they implement social actions. A productive line of research of interactional linguistics has been this tension between conventional linguistic units and units of (and for) interaction (Reed and Beatrice 2013; Ogden and Walker 2013). The cesura approach (Barth-Weingarten 2016) focuses on the constitution of phonetic-prosodic discontinuities, which give rise to boundaries, “cesuras”, which it treats as a continuum from “no cesura” through “candidate cesuras” of various strengths, to “full cesuras”. However, there are also elements of spoken interaction whose unit-hood is not obvious at all levels of description; and it is a subset of these that form the focus of this article. We illustrate this with extracts of multimodal talk where two interactants taste and assess unfamiliar food and produce the token “mm”. We show how the alignment (and non-alignment) of boundaries of sequential, prosodic, gestural, lexical, and syntactic units can be a semiotic resource. Data are obtained from Chilean Spanish.
|Abstract=This article explores the use of clicks—a nonverbal vocalization—in everyday talk. It is argued that clicks are one way of not saying something, i.e., of not producing talk when talk was due. While many clicks occur alongside verbal material, which provides a method for participants to ascribe an action to the turn in which they are embedded, many do not. The article explores the linguistic (especially phonetic), sequential and embodied resources available to participants to make sense of such clicks. It is argued that some clicks have properties of linguistic organization: They have nonarbitrary form-meaning mappings. Other clicks by contrast are interpreted more as ad hoc, singular events. The article contributes to a less logocentric view of talk-in-interaction. Data are in British and American English from audio and video.
