|Abstract=This paper is concerned with a methodology for the study of intercultural communication. We argue that intercultural communication should be regarded and analyzed as ordinary communication. Intercultural communication is often analyzed as a type of communication in which meanings and communicative practices are not shared between the participants, thus leading to miscommunication. Still, intercultural communication, as any type of communication, is only possible when interactants construct a common ground of meanings and practices that are oriented to as shared, and which we have called 'intercultural discourse'. We therefore propose an analysis of intercultural communication which aims at the reconstruction of the 'common ground' and of the process of its construction. This process can, but need not be characterized by misunderstandings. In this paper, we illustrate this reconstruction method with an analysis of the construction of word meaning in Dutch-Surinamese work-meetings of educational specialists in the Netherlands.
|Abstract=Generally, online support groups are viewed as low-threshold services. We challenge this assumption with an investigation, based on Conversation Analysis and Membership Categorization Analysis, of contributions to an online support group on eating disorders. In this analysis we show how a new member interacts with existing members in order to display legitimacy for membership of the group. The group operates as a Community of Practice, since membership is organized as joined participation in a writing practice. It becomes clear that becoming a member involves subscribing to normative requirements, centrally, displaying the insight that you are ill. In the case we focus on, this involves the requirement to leave pro-anorexia as a membership category behind. The novice does not yet seem ready to subscribe to this norm and thus the threshold for seeking support is heightened.
|Abstract=For professionals such as doctors, teachers, or different kinds of counsellors, talking with their clients is a major part of their profession. Professionals and clients give and ask information until they reach a state of mutual knowledge or understanding. This paper argues that for this talk they use a tool, the machinery of social interaction, with characteristics that influence the outcomes of their talk. One characteristic is the normative organization of interaction through which the contribution of one participant puts restrictions on the range of possible follow-up contributions of another participant. This may cause client behavior that does not align with the institutional aims of the professional. A second trait is that interactants have no access to each other’s cognitions such as intentions, interpretations, knowing, and understanding. Professionals should thus be aware that what clients say has a relatively loose relation with what they know and understand.
|Abstract=Background
Decision-making is integral to genetic counselling and the premise is that autonomous decisions emerge if patients are provided with information in a non-directive manner. The pivotal activity in prenatal diagnosis counselling with at-risk pregnant women is decision-making regarding invasive procedures. This process is not well understood in multicultural settings.
Objective
This study examined multicultural genetic counselling interactions with women of advanced maternal age (AMA). It aimed to investigate the participants’ orientation towards the amniocentesis decision.
Design
Data were collected during14 video-recorded consultations between 6 genetic counsellors and 14 women of AMA in a genetic counselling clinic in South Africa. The design was qualitative and Conversation Analysis was used for analysis.
Results
Analysis revealed that counsellors used several strategies to facilitate discussions and decision-making. However, the invitation to make a decision regarding amniocentesis was not perceived as being neutral. Both the counsellors and the women appeared to treat the offer as one which should be accepted. This resulted in a paradox, as strategies intended to allow neutral discussion seem to achieve the opposite. It is suggested that these results may be linked to the local health care setting.
Conclusion
The results suggest that the understanding of decision-making processes and enhancing autonomy may require a more detailed investigation into psychosocial, political and historical factors in the local health care setting. Models of practice as well as the training of genetic counsellors need to be sensitive to these influences. A closer examination of interactional variables may yield new and relevant insights for the profession.
|Abstract=The role of grammar in talk-in-interaction has recently become a focal point of conversation analytic research. Yet how different clause types, such as declaratives and interrogatives, contribute to action formation is still rather vague. We approach this issue by looking at three questioning actions that are designed with a declarative prefaced by a specific lexical item: want, dus, and oh. We will demonstrate that each action presupposes that the speaker has a high degree of certainty: want is used to account, dus to infer, and oh conveys a change-of-state, typically from not knowing (K−) to knowing (K+). Based on these findings, we will argue that declarative questions are used when a speaker claims a particular epistemic stance, and in turn that epistemic stance constrains the actions that a clause type can be used for.
|Abstract=This paper analyzes the role of helpdesk calls in the client communication package of pension funds. Our audio-corpus of 77 helpdesk calls contained 104 client questions. These show that clients seem tocall the helpdesk in order to repair a comprehension problem, to find specific information they missed,to repair incorrect information or an administrative failure. In terms of Media Synchronicity Theory, helpdesk calls are most often used to repair unsuccessful conveyance processes by providing extra infor-mation, rectifying information or by addressing misunderstandings. Overall, the helpdesk is only usedfor straightforward inquiries and problems, not for financial advice.
|Abstract=Emotion is a phenomenon that has attracted interest from Ancient Greece through philosophers such as Descartes and Spinoza to present times when it was picked up primarily in psychology as an element of cognition. Over the last 20 to 30 years however, the interest in emotion has increased dramatically not only in psychology, but also in the social sciences and the humanities (see for an overview Wetherell 2012). In ‘cultural studies,’ emotion – or ‘affect’ - has been treated as a concept that allows research to move beyond notions of discourse and cognition to the realm of the unconscious (e.g. Massumi 1996) in an interesting parallel to psychologists who have investigated emotion to move beyond a too rational and information-processing concept of cognition (e.g. Haidt 2012). At the same time we have witnessed a move in the empirical sciences, especially in the study of social interaction, from a focus on emotion as feeling to emotion as behaviour. This chapter on emotion display seeks to bring together and relate this work on emotion behaviour.
Data were collected during14 video-recorded consultations between 6 genetic counsellors and 14 women of AMA in a genetic counselling clinic in South Africa. The design was qualitative and Conversation Analysis was used for analysis.
The results suggest that the understanding of decision-making processes and enhancing autonomy may require a more detailed investigation into psychosocial, political and historical factors in the local health care setting. |Abstract=The opening sequence of an emergency call influences the efficiency of the ambulance dispatch time. The greeting sequences in 105 calls to a South African emergency service were analysed. Initial results suggested the advantage of a specific two-part opening sequence. An on-site experiment aimed at improving call efficiency was conducted during one shift (1100 calls). Results indicated reduced conversational repairs and a significant reduction of 4 seconds in mean call length. Implications for systems and training are derived.
