|Abstract=In this contribution, we approach the interactional activity of defining by focusing on the interweaving of the resources of various natures –linguistic, prosodic, gestural and spatial– which the participants use for it. We study definition in guided tours of two gardens (an ethnobotanic garden and a ‘garden in motion'). On the basis of an observed recurring functioning, based on the successive stages of ‘producting the visibility of a referent', ‘giving its name' and ‘defining', we examine the formats used by the participants, in connection with the temporality of the interaction and the nature of the garden. The study highlights how the activity of defining conveys the specific philosophy of the two gardens and offers a very different apprehension of the vegetable world.&lt;br /&gt;

|Abstract=Starting out from the fundamental role of intercomprehension in conversation, the article studies definitorial activities as one of the procedures aiming at the establishment of a satisfactory degree of meaning to reciprocal activities allowing the poursuit of communicative objectives. Based on a corpus-driven analysis of six conversational sequences from different contexts involving activities delimitating the ‘signified' (signifié) as well as the possibility to identify the referent of a ‘signified', the author examines definitorial activities as phenomena of definitionin-interaction. These are marked by the following characteristics: their interactiveness, the diversity of forms, their more or less developed form, their ‘natural', non-scientific and uncertain nature.&lt;br /&gt;

|Abstract=The present article concerns the analysis of a meeting, by means of visio-communication, between detained students (with the head teacher of the prison's local teaching unit present) and a group of university lecturers. The objective of the meeting is to pinpoint and solve the practical difficulties which these same students –actually detained– experience in a distant learning program follow-up (undergraduate level). The joint examination of the audio-visual recording and the transcript of the multiparty interaction (11 participants in total, in both sites) reveals phenomena associated with the process of definition which appears all along the interaction, especially in the interactional process of specification by two speakers of the “same term”. Interactional linguistics will thus develop its investigation on situated data, by means of semantic tools.&lt;br /&gt;

|Abstract=Drawing from a multi-sited ethnography in gay and lesbian parenting focus groups, in drag king workshops, and in political rallies in the defense of the french same sex mariage law, I will analyse linguistic and interactional ressources mobilized by participants in order to define a word concerning gender and kinship. |Abstract=This article analyses practices of definition observable in a mutual help group for people suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). The authors apply the analytic tools offered by conversation analysis and propose an endogenous and situated description of the notion of definition. This approach allows the authors to conceive definitions as collective practices through which participants display and negotiate their knowledge and, ultimately, their right to define. Displays of agreement and disagreement appear to be fundamental in the dynamic and interactional achievement of a definition. The article is based on a corpus of interactions in Flemish Dutch.&lt;br /&gt;
